Design the friction

Willpower is a terrible daily strategy — it's finite, it's worst when you're tired, and it's needed most exactly when you have least. Environment doesn't get tired. Change the environment and you stop needing the willpower.

Both directions matter. Reduce the steps between you and the habit you want; add steps between you and the one you don't. Twenty seconds of friction is usually enough to decide the outcome, because most habits are triggered by convenience rather than desire.

Cheap changes that work

You will not out-discipline a bad setup. Fix the setup once instead of fighting it daily.
